Cappadocia, Turkey: A Dream Carved in Stone

Cappadocia is one of those rare places in the world that feels too magical to be real. It’s a landscape full of color, texture, and history—a patchwork of wild natural patterns, sunbaked valleys, and ancient stone carved into shapes that look like they belong in a fairytale. Every corner had its own story: wooden doors painted in rich hues, windows framed by intricate designs, rugs woven with more detail than most wardrobes, and hand-painted ceramics that seemed to glow with life. Everywhere I looked, there were pops of color and layers of texture waiting to be discovered.

Living Among the Caves

Staying in a cave hotel was an experience unlike anything else. To wake up with hot Turkish tea in hand, surrounded by stone walls where people once lived centuries ago, made me feel like I was part of history. The mornings were surreal—the sky filled with hot air balloons, hundreds of them, drifting together like confetti floating against the rising sun. And when it was finally my turn to climb into the basket of one, I felt like I had stepped into a painting, floating above valleys and fairy chimneys that seemed to stretch endlessly.

A Feast for the Senses

Even the food was unforgettable. Every meal was a celebration—fresh, colorful, bursting with flavor. I found myself savoring dishes like they were works of art, each bite layered with spices, textures, and richness. It wasn’t just food—it was a full-blown palette of color and taste, a party for the senses.

Underground Cities & Fairy Chimneys

Exploring Cappadocia’s underground cities was like walking through the pages of a storybook. Tunnels and hidden chambers stretched deep into the earth, places where people once lived, worked, and found refuge. Above ground, the fairy chimneys—those tall, whimsical rock formations—looked like something sculpted by dreamers rather than carved by time and wind. It was easy to let my imagination wander, to think of stories I’d one day share with my granddaughter Audrey about a land where people lived under the ground and balloons danced in the skies.

Sunsets & Stained Glass Nights

The sunsets in Cappadocia were the kind that stop you in your tracks. Soft golden hues painted across the sky, melting into pinks and purples, as the strange stone valleys below caught the fading light. And at night, stained glass windows glowed like jewels scattered throughout the city, spilling color into the streets and giving everything an almost ethereal glow.

Cappadocia is a dream you don’t wake up from.

It’s a place that stirs your imagination, makes you feel connected to something ancient, and leaves you with memories so vibrant they feel like they could only exist in a fairytale.
